PELLETS
Latvia has many natural grasslands, the management of which produces surplus mowed grass. This is valuable biomass that is often not used because it is unsuitable for animal feed or because there is too much grass in some years. However, mowing is necessary for natural grasslands to be preserved.
In addition, some of Latvia’s natural grasslands are wetlands. They are mainly covered with sedges and reeds and have low usability. Moreover, they tend to flood not only in spring, but also during summer and autumn rains, which significantly complicates the management of these grasslands.

As part of the LIFE UpcyclingGrass project, hay obtained from natural grassland areas is processed into pellets for further use as a raw material for the production of various environmentally friendly products for agriculture, horticulture, and forestry.
The pellets replace existing non-renewable agricultural, horticultural, and forestry market products with products made from natural grass biomass.
